Okay, so, I’ve been digging into this whole Kobo Libra 2 thing. You know, wondering how long this e-reader’s gonna get updates and all that. It’s a bit of a rabbit hole, but I figured I’d share what I found cause I guess it helps someone out there.
First off, I went and checked the current firmware version. It is named 4.38.23171. I did this because I wanted to see what’s the latest and greatest they’re offering.
Then I went and saw some folks online, and many users were saying that Kobo’s actually pretty good with long-term support for their older devices. That’s a relief, right? I mean, who wants to buy a gadget and then have it become obsolete in like a year or two? Also, one user online is saying that the general release circle for these devices is around 3 years, so that’s a good sign.
But here’s the thing, I also saw that Kobo has stopped selling the Libra 2 on their main site. I saw it when I browsed their website. Checked it multiple times, no dice. But I did notice some third-party stores still have it. Like, I saw Chapters Indigo in Canada even had a discount on it, a cool $20 off. So, it’s like, are they phasing it out? Or is it just a temporary thing? It is still available to buy on Amazon, though. I saw that they are selling the black ones now, but the white ones are no longer available.

And get this, Kobo’s got this new update coming, the “final update for 2024.” This includes a white Kobo Stylus 2 and other cool stuff. I mean, it is not a hardware update, but it’s something, I guess.
Also, I was thinking, even if they stop updating the Libra 2, it’s not like it’ll just stop working, you know? It’ll still be a solid e-reader. And honestly, e-readers don’t really need constant updates like, say, your phone or computer. They are simple devices that are designed to do one simple thing, read.
So, yeah, that’s my little adventure into the world of Kobo Libra 2 support. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but overall, I’m feeling pretty good about it. I mean, Kobo seems to care about their older devices, and even if the Libra 2 is on its way out, it’s still a solid choice. But I think the safest bet is to keep an eye on them updates and pray for the best. Or something like that, you get me?
Anyways, I hope this was helpful or at least somewhat entertaining. I know I just kind of threw all this stuff out there, but hey, that’s how I roll. If you have any thoughts or questions, feel free to hit me up.
