Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Mission Cancer thing in Des Moines. It’s somethin’ alright, a real big deal for folks ’round here.
What is this Mission Cancer anyways?
See, it all started way back in 1981. Doctors called it MOHA then, somethin’ fancy like Medical Oncology and Hematology Associates. But now they call it Mission Cancer + Blood. Sounds important, don’t it? They got these smart doctors, come from all over, even fancy schools and big hospitals. They say they’re a team, a family even. They deal with cancer and blood problems, the serious stuff.
Cancer, it’s everywhere.
They say cancer is all over Iowa. Not just in Des Moines, mind you. Everywhere. It’s scary stuff, this cancer. Lots of folks get it, young and old. That’s why this Mission Cancer place is so important. They fight this cancer, try to make folks better. They’re tryin’ to stop it, for good they say.
- They got specialists, doctors who know all about cancer and blood.
- They do research, tryin’ to figure out how to beat this cancer. Sciency stuff, you know?
- They take care of folks, give ‘em medicine and stuff. Help ‘em feel better.
Partnerin’ up with the University
I heard tell they even got somethin’ goin’ on with the University of Iowa. Big agreement they made. Means more help for folks with cancer, more doctors and treatments and such. That University, it’s a big place, lots of smart folks there too. So, Mission Cancer and the University workin’ together, that’s gotta be good, right?
More than Just Doctors
It ain’t just about the doctors and medicine neither. They got places for folks to stay if they gotta travel far for treatment. That’s good, ’cause travelin’ is hard when you’re sick. And they got this thing called “Above + Beyond Cancer”. Sounds nice, goin’ the extra mile for folks. It’s important to treat people good, especially when they’re feelin’ poorly.
They want to stop all cancers
They say they wanna stop all cancers, for good. Every single one. That’s a big job, a real big job. They’re doin’ research, sciency stuff I told ya about, tryin’ to find the answers. They focus on somethin’ called the immune system, which I guess is what fights off sickness in your body. They say they’ve saved lots of lives already, all over the world even. And they wanna save more, millions more they say. They need help though, money and such, to keep doin’ their work. They got this goal, to get rid of cancer completely. That would be somethin’ wouldn’t it? No more cancer, imagine that.
Georgie and their Cancer Mission too
I even heard there is somethin’ goin’ on down in Georgie. They got their own Cancer Center, just like Mission here in Iowa. They got the same idea, want to get rid of cancer for everyone. They do research and take care of folks, just like Mission does. See, it ain’t just us folks here in Iowa fightin’ this cancer, it’s everywhere. And that’s good, lots of folks workin’ together to beat this thing.
So, that’s Mission Cancer
So that’s the story of Mission Cancer, best as I can tell it. They’re good folks, doin’ important work. Fightin’ cancer, helpin’ people, tryin’ to make things better. It ain’t easy, but they’re puttin’ up a good fight. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of.
And that’s all I gotta say ’bout that.
