Okay, so the other day I got this crazy idea to make a constellation light. You know, those cool things that project stars all over your room? I wanted to try making one myself. It seemed like a fun little project.
Getting Started
First, I needed to figure out what I was going to use. I rummaged through my junk drawers and found an old cardboard box, some aluminum foil, and a small flashlight. Perfect! I also grabbed a pin and some black paint.
- Cardboard box: This would be the main body of the projector.
- Aluminum foil: To line the inside and make it reflective.
- Flashlight: The light source, obviously.
- Pin: For poking the star holes.
- Black paint: To make the inside of the box as dark as possible.
Building the Thing
I started by painting the inside of the cardboard box black. I figured this would help the stars stand out better. It took a while to dry, and I had to do a couple of coats to get it really dark.
Next, I lined the inside of the box with aluminum foil. I just crumpled it up a bit first to give it some texture, then taped it in place. Shiny side up, of course!

Then came the fun part – making the constellations! I looked up some simple star patterns online, just basic stuff like the Big Dipper and Orion. Then, using the pin, I poked holes in the top of the box to match the patterns. This took some patience, and I definitely poked myself a few times. Ouch!
Showtime!
Once all the holes were poked, I put the flashlight inside the box, pointing it up at the top. I turned off the room lights, held my breath, and turned on the flashlight… and boom! Stars everywhere!
It wasn’t perfect, of course. Some of the stars were a bit blurry, and the foil crinkled in places, making weird shapes. But hey, it worked! I had my own little constellation projector. It was pretty awesome to see the stars on my ceiling, even if they were a little wonky.
I spent the rest of the evening just lying there, looking at the stars and feeling pretty darn proud of myself. It was a simple project, but it was super satisfying to build something with my own two hands. And now I have a cool new nightlight!
