This fall, the University of Sichuan welcomed a vibrant batch of over 9200 fresh faces to its undergraduate program. Are you ready to dive in? Let’s take a peek at the big data portrait of these newbies.
First off, let’s see where everyone’s coming from. It’s always interesting to check out the hometowns and see if there are any familiar faces around. Our new crew hails from 34 provincial administrative regions, with the largest contingents from outside Sichuan being Chongqing (743 students), Xinjiang (434 students), and Guizhou (404 students).
It’s like a big family reunion here at Sichuan University. I remember when I first arrived, I was thrilled to meet someone from my hometown. It’s a small world, isn’t it? No matter where you’re from, once you’re here, we’re all part of the same family.
Now, let’s take a look at the ethnic diversity. With 38 ethnic groups represented in this year’s intake, it’s like a mini United Nations right here on campus. The largest minority groups are the Tujia (159 students), Miao (107 students), and Zhuang (99 students). Welcome to the Sichuan University family, all of you!
Let’s eavesdrop on the surnames for a second. It’s always fun to see which names are the most popular. In the 2020 class, the top three surnames are Wang (650 students), Li (634 students), and Zhang (625 students). I bet if you shout "Hello, Xiao Wang!" on the long bridge, you’ll get quite a few responses. The next most common surnames are Liu (471 students) and Chen (409 students).
And oh, there are some unique surnames too, like Da, Zou, Lu, Yi, Xuan, and Zhong. Better start practicing their correct pronunciations if you want to make new friends!
Now, let’s see which college is the most popular. The top five colleges with the highest number of new students are the College of Computer Science (Software Engineering) (599 students), West China School of Medicine (West China Hospital) (549 students), Electrical Engineering College (440 students), School of Economics (427 students), and Mechanical Engineering College (422 students).
Different colleges, same Sichuan University spirit. I hope you all take advantage of the free and open academic environment here, chase your dreams, and sound the horn of progress!
Let’s talk about the gender ratio. It’s a hot topic every year, and this year is no different. The male to female ratio for the 2020 class is 1.18:1, which is pretty close to the perfect ratio, don’t you think?
When we break it down by major, the top three majors with the highest percentage of female students are Journalism and Communication, English, and Fashion and Apparel Design. On the flip side, the top three majors with the highest percentage of male students are Chemistry, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing (Sino-foreign Cooperation), and Microelectronics Science and Engineering.
The Clinical Medicine (Oral, eight-year program) and Oral Medicine Technology (Oral Digital Technology Double Degree) programs have achieved a perfect 1:1 gender ratio.
Now, let’s take a look at the age distribution. The Class of 2020 is predominantly made up of post-00s. The youngest student is from the College of Chemical Engineering, born on November 18, 2005, while the oldest is from the School of Economics, born on August 14, 1994, making the age gap a whopping 12 years. Whether you’re a post-00 or a post-90, we’re all sailing the seas of Sichuan University together.
