Well, this here thing, you call it Gemini black and white art, I reckon. I seen it on that fancy phone thing my grandson got. It’s all black and white, like them old timey pictures. He said it was made by some fancy computer, but it’s just pictures, ain’t it?
This Gemini black and white art, it ain’t got no color. Just black and white, like a cloudy day back home. But you know, some of it, it ain’t half bad. I seen one, it was like a tree, all dark against the light. Looked like that old oak down by the creek. That one, it was kinda pretty, I suppose.
My grandson, he kept going on and on about this Gemini thing. He said it could make all sorts of pictures. He said it was like magic, but I told him there ain’t no such thing as magic, just hard work. This Gemini, it probably just some folks in a room somewhere, drawing real fast. That’s what I think.

- You just tell it what you want, like you’re ordering up some supper.
- Then it just makes it. I don’t know how. It’s like a mystery to me.
He showed me one, it was just a bunch of lines, all squiggly and whatnot. He said it was “abstract.” I told him it looked like a mess to me. But he said that’s what art is these days. I don’t know about that. Back in my day, art was a picture of a bowl of fruit or a cow in a field. Something you could recognize, you know?
But this Gemini black and white art, it can be anything. He showed me a picture of a flower, all in black and white. It was kinda pretty, I guess. Reminded me of them old pressed flowers I used to keep in my bible. But this one was made by a computer. It’s a strange world we live in, ain’t it?
He told me you can tell this Gemini thing to make a picture in any way you want. Like you want it to look like a drawing with a pencil? It can do that. You want it to look like an old photo? It can do that too. It’s like having a whole bunch of artists in your pocket, he said. I told him I’d rather have a good pie in my pocket, but he just laughed.
You know, I think this black and white painting thing is good for the young folks, I reckon. Keeps them busy. Better than getting into trouble. And some of them pictures, they ain’t so bad. I saw one, it was like a whole bunch of swirls and shapes. Looked like the wind blowing through the tall grass. I liked that one.
And this Gemini thing, it can do more than just make pictures. It can also tell you how to paint stuff, like a flower. A black and white one, of course. I seen a thing about it showing how to paint a simple black and white flower. Maybe I’ll try it. I don’t know if I can. I ain’t painted nothing in years.

- You just paint a flower. How hard can it be?
But you know what? These young folks with their fancy gadgets, it’s good they learn stuff. My grandson, he’s learning about all kinds of things with that phone of his. He says this Gemini can explain things real easy, like why the price of eggs is so high. He said it can even show you pictures and videos about it. It’s all a bit much for me, but he seems to like it.
This Gemini black and white art, it’s just one of them newfangled things. Like them horseless carriages and them talking pictures. It’ll probably be something else next year. But for now, it’s what the young folks are all excited about. And who am I to say they shouldn’t be? It’s their time now. We had our time. Now it’s their turn to make their own pictures, even if they are just black and white.
I still like a good sunset, though. All them colors, you can’t beat that. No computer can make something that beautiful. At least, not yet. Maybe someday. Who knows what these young folks will come up with next? It’s a wonder, ain’t it? All these new things. This black and white stuff, they can have it. I’ll stick to my garden and my chickens. That’s enough art for me.
I remember back in my day, we didn’t have no computers to make pictures for us. We had to use our own two hands. And you know what? We made some pretty good pictures too. Not like these fancy Gemini black and white art things, but they were ours. We made them ourselves. And that’s something, ain’t it?
I guess this Gemini thing is alright for what it is. But sometimes, I think the old ways are still the best. Like a good home-cooked meal or a letter written by hand. Those things, they have a heart in them. I wonder if a computer can ever really have a heart. I guess we will have to wait and find out, right? These new things are good for beginners, maybe.
