Well, you know, it’s been a real puzzler these days, ain’t it? Folks been talking ’bout them big ol’ companies, you know, the ones makin’ billions every year. But what’s funny is, they ain’t payin’ no taxes! Yep, that’s right. Some of them Fortune 500 companies, who’re rakin’ in all that money, ain’t payin’ a single penny to the government. Now, ain’t that a thing to wonder ’bout?
Take for instance, them big names like General Electric, Tesla, and Facebook’s owner, Meta. They all made billions in profits, yet when it came time to pay their fair share, they sure found a way to dodge it. I heard that last year, these companies didn’t pay nothin’. Some even got refunds, like the government was payin’ ’em back. How does that work, huh? Seems a little strange if you ask me.
Here’s what I know: 55 of them Fortune 500 companies, with billions in profits, didn’t pay any federal taxes last year. That includes big ones like FedEx and T-Mobile. These are companies that made money hand over fist, but still somehow, managed to avoid paying their taxes. How they do it, you ask? Well, it ain’t all that clear. But they sure got some clever accountants workin’ for ’em.
Back in the day, we didn’t think too much about taxes. We paid ‘em, simple as that. But now, it seems like them big companies got ways to keep all that money for themselves. You might wonder, if these big businesses don’t pay their taxes, where’s the money gonna come from to fix the roads, or pay for schools, or help folks who need it? It just don’t seem right, does it?
Now, how did this happen?
Well, back in 2017, they passed something called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. They slashed the tax rate from 35% down to 21%. That’s a big drop, and it gave all them big corporations a whole lotta room to wiggle out of payin’. But some of these companies were already paying near nothin’ even before that. Even with all these fancy tax cuts, the money still ain’t makin’ it into the federal pot like it should.
It’s also been said that some of them companies have been able to use loopholes to make their profits look smaller than they really are. Now, I don’t know how they do it, but it sounds like somethin’ fishy is goin’ on. They get to keep their profits, and we get stuck with the bill. Ain’t that somethin’?
What’s the result of all this?
Well, the rest of us regular folks, we’re stuck payin’ the taxes that they ain’t. While them big companies keep makin’ their money and not payin’ their fair share, the government has to get it from somewhere else. And that means higher taxes for us. So, while them big corporations are enjoyin’ their billions, we’re workin’ harder just to pay our own bills.
And don’t think it’s just small businesses either. No sir, even medium-sized companies have to pay their taxes, but somehow, these big ones don’t. It ain’t fair, and it sure don’t seem right. I reckon if you’re makin’ a profit in this country, you oughta pitch in to help keep things runnin’. After all, it ain’t just about makin’ money. It’s about bein’ part of the community and doin’ your part to keep the wheels turnin’ for everyone else.
So, what’s to be done about it?
Well, folks been talkin’ ‘bout tax reform for a long time now. Some say the government oughta go after these companies harder, make ’em pay up like the rest of us. Others say maybe they should put in new rules so these companies can’t just hide their profits in some foreign country or use all these loopholes to get away with it. Whatever it is, somethin’ needs to change, and quick, or else it’s gonna keep goin’ like this, with big corporations gettin’ richer while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet.
Now, I ain’t no expert, but it sure seems like a mess. If them big companies ain’t payin’ their taxes, then we gotta ask, who’s gonna step up and do it for ’em? Because it ain’t us little folks who’re gonna make up for all that lost tax revenue, that’s for sure.
Conclusion: Them Fortune 500 companies not payin’ taxes? It’s a real problem, ain’t it? We all got to do our part, and so should they. It’s high time these big ol’ companies start pitchin’ in and helpin’ out with the bills, instead of stackin’ up more money while the rest of us struggle.
